Jets demote Nathaniel Hackett, tap Todd Downing to call offense

Todd Downing will replace Nathaniel Hackett as the New York Jets’ offensive playcaller going forward, interim coach Jeff Ulbrich announced Thursday.

Hackett will remain the Jets’ offensive coordinator, with Downing remaining as the Jets’ passing game coordinator, Ulbrich said.

It’s the first major decision made by Ulbrich, who was promoted to interim coach Tuesday when the Jets fired Robert Saleh after four seasons.

Ulbrich also announced that he will retain his title of defensive coordinator and remain the defense’s playcaller, he said.

He said quarterback Aaron Rodgers “understood” the decision to demote Hackett from playcalling duties, Ulbrich said.

Downing is in his second season as the Jets’ passing game coordinator. Before that, he was the Tennessee Titans’ offensive coordinator for two seasons.

The Jets have sputtered to a 2-3 start, with the offense ranked 27th in total offense this season.

The Jets face the Buffalo Bills (3-2) on “Monday Night Football” this week with a chance to tie for the AFC East lead.
