COLUMBUS, Ohio — By the middle of this week, Ohio State had already sold more than 50,000 tickets to a spring game that was still three days from kickoff. The forecast for Saturday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio, calls for sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-60s, which means head coach Ryan Day and his staff will be expecting a monster turnout.
Excitement is swirling around the Buckeyes following an offseason that included the retention of numerous key players on defense, the hiring of UCLA head coach Chip Kelly as offensive coordinator, and commitments from some of the highest-rated players in the transfer portal. But Saturday also marks the first time that any spring football game — regardless of school — will have a nationwide television audience.
“I think it’s a great, great day planned,” Day said at a news conference earlier this week. “An opportunity to be the first-ever spring game that’s gonna be televised nationally on FOX is just so exciting for our guys and for Buckeye nation and for the program. Really cool, really great opportunity. So our guys want to put on a show, you know, and have some fun with it.”
