Atlanta Dream guard Rhyne Howard, who injured her left ankle Wednesday, is expected to be out for an indefinite period.
The Dream said a timeline for Howard’s return to play will be provided in the coming weeks.
Howard is averaging 15.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.2 steals for Atlanta, which is 6-7 entering Friday’s game against the Indiana Fever.
Howard, the 2022 top overall pick and Rookie of the Year, was injured when she stepped on the foot of Minnesota Lynx guard Courtney Williams while driving to the basket in the third quarter.
She had her ankle wrapped and was using a scooter to get around before Friday’s game.
A two-time All-Star, Howard is the second member of the 2024 U.S. 3×3 Olympic team to be injured this week during a WNBA game. Los Angeles Sparks forward Cameron Brink suffered a torn ACL in her left knee Tuesday and will miss the rest of the WNBA season and Olympics.
The Olympics are July 26 to Aug. 11, so Howard could still participate depending on the severity of her injury and recovery time.
“It’s part of the game, this is all part of basketball,” Dream coach Tanisha Wright said of what she has told Howard. “An opportunity to kind of sit back and view the game from a different perspective and continue to give positive feedback and be an energy-giver to her teammates.
“We’re a team for a reason, we have multiple pieces that can really contribute to our success. Obviously, Rhyne is a big piece, but we have other people who can step up and really play at a high level.”
