Lynx’s Napheesa Collier named WNBA’s Defensive Player of Year

Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier has been selected as the 2024 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year, the league announced Sunday.

Collier received 36 votes from a national panel of 60 media members and broadcasters to win the honor for the first time.

She ranked second in the WNBA in steals (1.91 per game), third in rebounds (9.7 per game) and seventh in blocks (1.41 per game), posting career-high averages in all three categories. The Lynx finished with the league’s second-best defensive rating (94.8) while holding teams to the WNBA’s lowest field goal percentage (41.0%).

Collier, a four-time All-Star selection who also won her second Olympic gold medal this year, averaged 20.4 points and 3.4 assists in 34.7 minutes per game this season.

Collier was joined on the league’s all-defensive first team by Las Vegas’ A’ja Wilson, Seattle’s Ezi Magbegor, Connecticut’s DiJonai Carrington and New York’s Breanna Stewart.
