Portland State canceled its Week 3 meeting with South Dakota due to an outbreak of whooping cough within its football program, the Vikings announced Saturday afternoon.
Portland State (0-2) was set to host South Dakota (1-1) Saturday following losses to Washington State and Weber State to open the 2024 season. A statement released by the program noted that no players within the program are seriously ill at this time.
“A case of pertussis (whooping cough) got into the Viking team two days ago,” the program said in the statement. “As a result, many team members have been exposed to the disease. The two programs and their team doctors have been in discussions regarding the situation. It was determined by Portland State that the game would not be played in the interest of the health of the student-athletes.”
Whooping cough is transmitted through the air and people suffering from whooping cough can remain contagious for at least two weeks, per the Center for Disease Control.
Portland State is scheduled to visit Boise State in Week 4. South Dakota will face Drake at home when it returns to action next Saturday. Information on ticketing and refunds for Saturday’s canceled game will be announced at a later date, according to Portland State.
