Source – Padres nearing deal for Marlins 2B Luis Arraez

The San Diego Padres are nearing a deal to acquire second baseman Luis Arraez from the Miami Marlins for a package of three prospects and a relief pitcher, a source familiar with the deal told ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The trade is pending a medical review but is expected to be finalized soon.

Arraez, 27, won the 2022 AL batting title for Minnesota, hitting .316 with eight homers and 49 RBIs, then was traded to Miami in January 2023. He captured the NL batting title last year with the Marlins, setting career highs with a .354 average, 10 homers and 69 RBIs.

Arraez was just the third player all-time to win a batting title in both the AL and the NL over a career, much less in consecutive seasons, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

Hall-of-Famer Ed Delahanty won the NL batting title in 1899 with the Phillies and the AL in 1902 with the Senators. DJ LeMahieu also did it in 2016 with the Rockies and in the shortened 2020 season with the Yankees.

Arraez is hitting .299 with five RBIs so far this year for a Marlins team sitting in last place in the NL East.

He’s set to hit free agency after the 2025 season.
