Sources – 49ers to promote Sorensen to DC, add Staley to staff

The San Francisco 49ers are staying in-house for their new defensive coordinator while also bringing in former Los Angeles Chargers coach Brandon Staley for a prominent staff role, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler on Saturday.

Sources said the 49ers plan to make defensive passing game specialist Nick Sorensen their new defensive coordinator.

Sorensen joined the 49ers in 2022 as a defensive assistant then was promoted to defensive passing game specialist/nickelbacks last year. He spent the 2021 season as the Jacksonville Jaguars’ special teams coordinator and, before that, eight seasons on Pete Carroll’s Seahawks staff in a variety of roles.

Staley will join the 49ers after three seasons as Chargers coach. He is expected to be given the title of assistant head coach, sources said.
