USA 1-1 Brazil (Jun 12, 2024) Game Analysis

Christian Pulisic scored with a clever free kick to help the United States to a 1-1 draw with Brazil in Orlando, Florida, on Wednesday night, as the two teams prepare to play in this summer’s Copa América.

After losing 5-1 to Colombia in a friendly on Saturday and going behind to Brazil early in the match after Rodrygo goal, it looked like another long night was in story for Gregg Berhalter’s side.

But Pulisic, fresh off a stellar year with club team AC Milan, earned a free kick at the top of the area and sent Brazil keeper Allison the wrong way with a low line drive through traffic that found the back of the net.

Rodrygo opened the scoring after 17 minutes as Brazil pounced on a misplaced Matt Turner clearance to regain possession before Raphinha set the Real Madrid forward up for a smooth finish.

The U.S. could have had more as Allison turned away Pulisic from close range in the second half and stuffed Brenden Aaronson on the doorstep to keep the score level.

It was the first time in 20 meetings that the U.S. has drawn with Brazil and snapped an 11-game losing streak dating back to 1998.

The Copa America runs from June 20 to July 14 in the United States, where the host nation plays Bolivia on June 23, followed by matches against Panama and Uruguay in Group C.

Nine-times champions Brazil kick off their Group D campaign against Costa Rica on June 24 before facing Paraguay and Colombia.
