One of the biggest stars in the history of the United States women’s national soccer team is calling it a career.
Alex Morgan, 35, announced her retirement from soccer on Thursday.
“I have so much clarity about this decision,” Morgan said in a video posted to her social media accounts. “I’m so happy to be able to finally tell you. It has been a long time coming and this decision wasn’t easy, but at the beginning of 2024, I felt in my heart and soul that this was the last season I would play soccer.”
Morgan ends her career as one of the most decorated women’s soccer players of all time. She helped the United States win two World Cups (2015 and 2019) and an Olympic gold medal in 2012. She was a constant force for the USWNT from her first call-up in 2010 through nearly the end of her career, scoring 123 goals in 224 international caps, which is the eighth-most international goals of all time.
In addition to announcing her retirement, Morgan shared that she is pregnant with her second child. Morgan and her husband, Servando Carrasco, had their first child, a daughter named Charlie, in 2020.
Morgan is also in her third season with the San Diego Wave FC of the NWSL, recording just one assist this season. She’ll play in a final match for San Diego Wave FC on Sunday.
“Soccer’s been a part of me for 30 years,” Morgan said. “It was one of the first things that I ever loved. I gave everything to the sport and what I got in return was more than I ever could have dreamed of.”
