Wrexham 1-0 Burton Albion (Dec 7, 2024) Game Analysis

Wrexham moved level on points with League Two leaders Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday after Elliot Lee’s miraculous goal direct from a corner kick earned the Welsh club a narrow win away at Burton Albion.

Lee’s effort in the 65th minute looped over Burton goalkeeper Max Crocombe and deflected into the goal off the far post.

The driving rain around Burton’s Pirelli Stadium meant both sides struggled to impose themselves on the contest during the opening 45 minutes. Mason Bennett came closest to opening the scoring on the stroke of half-time, but his effort was comfortably saved by Wrexham’s 38-year-old goalkeeper Mark Howard.

The deadlock was finally broken midway through the second half with Lee’s “Olimpico” goal, which may have been helped over Crocombe’s fingertips by the driving rain and swirling wind brought on by Storm Darragh.

Crocombe went some way to making up for his error in the 88th minute with an impressive double save that denied first Steven Fletcher, and then Paul Mullin, from doubling Wrexham’s lead late on.

But in a match of few chances, it was Lee’s goal that proved the difference and moved Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ side level on points with Wycombe at the top of the League One table. Wrexham have played one game more than their title rivals.

Meanwhile, Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson confirmed that goakeeper Callum Burton will be sidelined for an “extended period” after suffering a thigh tear during the team’s win over Barnsley on Tuesday.
